The proliferation of knowledge graphs and recent advances in AI have raised great expectations on the combination of symbolic and distributional semantics in cognitive tasks like natural language processing. In this talk we show how to bring together distributional and knowledge-based approaches to NLP (Natural Language Processing) by capturing as embeddings in a joint space the semantics of both words and concepts.

During the talk we will share reflections and experiences on relevant aspects of this approach, like the trade-off between corpus size and domain specificity and the instruments needed to evaluate the quality of the resulting joint embeddings.

Finally, we illustrate how this approach can be applied in domains like disinformation analysis, and extended to address additional data modalities involving not only text but also figures and diagrams in scientific bibliography, with a positive impact in different tasks of multimodal machine comprehension (M3C).

About Dr. José Manuel Gómez Pérez

Focusing on Natural Language Processing, Dr. José Manuel Gómez Pérez works in the intersection of several areas of Artificial Intelligence with the goal to enable machine comprehension as an analogous process to human reading.

At Expert System, he leads the Research Lab in Madrid and believes that the above vision is best served by combining structured knowledge with machine learning. Before Expert System, he worked at iSOCO, one of the first European companies to deliver Semantic and NLP solutions on the Web. He consults for organizations like the European Space Agency, Coca-Cola, HAVAS and ING, co-founded two startups and advised another. An ACM member and former Marie Curie fellow, Dr. Gómez holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence and regularly publishes in top scientific conferences and journals. His views on AI and its applications have appeared in magazines like Nature and Scientific American, as well as newspapers like El País.
